Berkeley Kite Wranglers Giant Show Kite Team and their Trademark "Octopile"

Formed at the turn of the Millennium, the Berkeley Kite Wranglers have become the premier giant creature-kite team on the planet. The Wrangler collection contains nearly 30,000 square feet of giant creature kites and is the largest of its kind on earth. Giant kites in the Wrangler stable include cats, bears, geckos, manta rays, tropical fish, lobsters, frogs, a prehistoric trilobite and much more. "I don't know why," said Wrangler John Khan, but "I have always had a strange affinity for frogs. They are not the biggest kites in our collec-tion but I have always liked them." The giant octopi kites also seem to hold a special fascination for the team and awestruck festival crowds. At the 2006 Berkeley Kite Festival the Wranglers set a world record for the largest number of giant Peter Lynn Octopi ever flown anywhere. Though their record now stands at ten giant octopi kites, they plan to break it in 2007. Each giant octopus kite is 20-feet wide and nearly 100 feet long. The pod, or "Octopile" as the team likes to call it, flies in perfect formation as if it knew it were part of the team. With all those tentacles floating rhythmically in the air, the Octopile seems to take on a life of its own. "One or two giant Octopi kites are a sight to see," Wrangler member Tom McAlister, "but when the Berkeley Kite Wranglers fly their Octopile of nine, ten or even more it becomes a wondrously vibrant spectacle you have to see to believe. And once you see it, you will never forget it."

In a perfect world the words "children" and "hospice" should never go together. The reality is that they sometimes do, and when they do, Children's Hospice and Palliative Care Coalition is there to make sure the children and their families get the care they need.

Your generous support of the Bay Area Sport Kite Leagues 2nd Annual Kite Festival at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk will help us achieve our goal of providing compassionate care for families of children with life threatening conditions. It is because of big hearted members of our community like you that we have been able to set up a program that is the first of its kind,a new model of coordinated care that integrates community-based care with the children's hospital.

Each day, our office in Watsonville bustles with the efforts of our bilingual Nurse Care Coordinators, volunteers, drivers and committed partners. This dedicated team works tirelessly to bring family-centered coordinated care to children with life-threatening conditions on the Central Coast. The intimacy of the relationships created with the children and their families is extraordinary. Families rely on our nurses to be liaisons for them within the medical community, advocating for the best care for their child, and helping them navigate complex treatment schedules, translation issues, and emotional needs. Our drivers provide transportation services for families, making certain that seriously ill children with compromised immune systems need never take a bus to Palo Alto or San Francisco for treatment.

Our dedication to our local families is multiplied through Children's Hospice and Palliative Care Coalition's groundbreaking programs and services. We are so very proud that, because of our local efforts, the Nick Snow Children's Hospice and Palliative Care Act was signed into law and through this effort, we have dramatically improved care for nearly 18,000 children in California. We continue to develop and deliver programs and policies that empower parents and enable children with life-threatening conditions to receive care that embraces their physical, social, emotional, and spiritual needs. Due to its success in meeting the needs of families, our local Partnership for Children is now being used as a model of care in California for this new statewide pediatric hospice and palliative care benefit.

We are humbled by the mission that has been entrusted to us to ensure that seriously ill children and their families in our local community and throughout California receive quality, compassionate medical care. We are here to help these families hold on to hope, whatever form that hope may take, hope for a cure, time with family and friends, graduation, or, when a cure is not possible, hope for a loving and peaceful death.

Children's Hospice was recently honored by the California Association of Nonprofits as the recipient of the 2007 Achievement in Innovation Award; the Partnership for Children's nurse care coordinators, Sophia Schultz and Shoshana Spielman, received the Hospice Foundation's Kendall Inspiration Award; and as co-founders, we were honored to have been named 2007 Women of the Year by the Santa Cruz Chamber of Commerce.

By supporting this event and Children's Hospice and Palliative Care Coalition, you are helping to change the standard of care for seriously ill children and their families in our community and beyond our borders. With your sponsorship, you help ensure that these children continue to receive the support they deserve. To learn more about our meaningful work, please feel free to contact us or visit our web-site at www.childrensospice.org

We are so grateful to the Bay Area Sport Kite League, the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk and our generous sponsors for their support and we deeply appreciate your consideration. There is so much more to do and with your help, we can do it! Thank you.

On behalf of the children and their families,

BASKL events are low- cost, no- frills festival, which are 100% volunteer- based. Donations, sponsors and other fundraising pay for the bulk of expenses. While sport kites continue to be the primary focus, BASKL has branched out beyond just sport kites to include fighter kite, kite making and indoor competition, as well as kiting seminars. More…

Don King(Festival Announcer)

Our festival Announcer, Don has been involved with Kiting for many years. He has not only competed in sport kite competitions but also worked behind the scenes as one of the Bay Area Sport Kite League past presidents.

Kite Buggy/Kite Land Board Demos(Dave Sabilino, Christoph Riddle)

Kite bugging is probably the most popular form of power kiting. When bugging, the buggy pilot sits in a small, light vehicle while flying a kite that pulls the pilot and buggy. The seat is usually low to the ground and the wheels are no more than an arm's reach away. The pilot steers the buggy with pegs attached to the front forks. For power the pilot flies a steerable kite. The kite pulls the pilot and buggy much as a sail pulls a sailboat.

Dave Sabilino from Monterey has been involved with power kiting for the last ten years and is a five time National Freestyle Champion. Dave is sponsored by Ozone/ Windzup kites and Mad Kiting

At 18, Christoph Riddle has been kiting for seven years tearing it up on the coast of California. On the weekends you can find Christoph kiteboarding at Seaside beach, pushing the limits of both land and water kiting. Christoph is a versatile kiter who is passionate about all elements of the sport. Watch for him on the land, water, and snow. Christoph Rides for Ozone kites USA and Ground Industries Mountain boards

Bay Area Sundowners

With their signature Hyper kite stacks pulling long 40 foot tails, the Bay Area Sundowners are one of the most exciting teams in sports kite flying today. Originally named after a US Naval Flight team, the Sundowners have been part of the Kite community for over 15 years. The team's large colorful stacks of kites weave intricate patterns in the sky while they move and weave their bodies to keep their lines clear. Their routines are carefully crafted and choreographed to emotional music which rarely leaves a dry eye in the house.

Bol Races(BASKL Organizers)

"Bols" are large parachute-like wind devices that kitefliers use as line or ground decorations. But when contestants are asked to race this wonderful event called the ``Running of the Bols'', they take on a whole new personality.

The concept is simple -- stand with a 6 or 10 foot bol at the downwind side of the field, and when the starting signal is given, race upwind. With a dozen bols on the field, it becomes a fun-filled, slow motion extravaganza. Winners get Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk Ride Passes!
